Ulrike Leyens
Untitled

I started taking pictures with my dad's camera as a teenager. Soon, I turned my dream of becoming a photographer into reality by studying Visual Communications in Germany. During this period, I have spent a year as an exchange student at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, before finishing my photography degree in 1999 with a documentary project in Burkina Faso, West Africa. I obtained a Master's Degree at the University of Westminster, London, where I am now a part-time Senior Lecturer in Photographic Practice.

My passion for people and travel led my work into the editorial field where it has been published in numerous British and German publications. The list of clients includes Wallpaper, Time Out, John Murray Publishers, Redwood Publishing, Stern, Der Spiegel, Brigitte, Financial Times Deutschland, Lufthansa Magazin - to name a few.

Most of my images show people and places that seem ordinary and familiar, but are observed and shown from a slightly unusual but always sympathetic point-of-view. I am currently working on a personal project about my hometown, a small village in North Germany.

Ulrike is a German photographer living and working in London.
