Tramway
Within my practice I explore the notion of place whilst looking at the small precise details of everyday life. The process requires a prolonged investigation and a repetitive methodology. This produces multiple series, which on their own describe one aspect of the place, but combined begin to create an active map of the location, giving greater detail to the viewer.
The photographs and ephemera that I have collected whilst exploring the locations come as a direct reaction to the place. Initially these are not collected with any idea of context; however, once the collection grows and the place becomes more familiar, patterns begin to appear. Tramway is one of a number of these photographic series that look at the nature of rurality. Each series sits alone as an enquiry into place, yet they can combine to give a broader social view.
Tramway looks at the area surrounding the former mineral tramways that used to run through the mining landscape of mid Cornwall. The series looks at this landscape through my eyes; and as part of this enquiry I collect and record the world as I experience it. The work consists of images that are reflective of my time here, and that can describe that experience to others.
This work is based upon a unique view of the world around me, and tends to fit the psychogeographic model of being acutely aware of ones surroundings whilst actively exploring them. The aim is to allow the viewer access to this place too. By focusing on the vernacular details, and not the clichéd views usually associated with these particular places, it is possible to resurrect some subconscious feeling of belonging. It is the apparent familiarity of these images that allows for easier access; by moving between series and collections there will be an experience for the viewer, which reflects my own photographic exploration.

The installation of Tramway is significant, and aims to enhance the experience of the viewer. By moving between scale and format the viewer is asked to appreciate the smaller details. They must take time to walk around and discover the landscape themselves, piecing together in their own minds eye what goes on in between the pictures.
