'Three Projects'
At The Lido
A lot of my work starts off as experimental projects, as with this set, and at the time, back in 2004, I was very much in a cross-processing phase
I wanted to also try and divert away slightly from my usual style of photography which is normally completely void of human presence, and produce a fashion/portraiture project.
This has got to be one of the most interesting locations in London, and I believe it has been used for many a fashion shoot and music video. While not the most accessible of places, this has not deterred the graffiti artists of North West London; and probably further a field, from creating their personal piece of art inside the abandoned Lido’s grounds.
The results of the shoot were some punchy vibrant images, with a slightly moody and atmospheric feel.
Living at the Seafood Centre
This is the most recent project of the three, shot in 2006. I have used the same model as in the At The Lido series, a close friend of mine called Nici. This time though, I wanted to try and photograph her in a way that was an exploration of her and her circumstances at that point in her life.
Finishing uni and finding work, particularly as an artist is more often than not a trying time, especially when faced with the cost of living in London. This is what led Nici to spend some time renting a room in a warehouse that was once a Seafood Centre, supplying anything from King Prawns to Catfish. Many features of the building's previous usage is still evident, and as it was occupied by a selection of artists and musicians it made for some interesting surroundings to explore and to photograph my friend in.
Goldhurst Terrace
Once again, returning to 2004, some more experimental images. I shot these on a vintage camera that was passed down to me from my grandfather. It uses 120 film, and with a spare slide film I had lying around, I went out to test out the camera and see what kind of results it would give. I took a stroll down Goldhurst Terrace in North West London and shot these images of whatever I passed along the road.
Again, I cross processed the film and was quite intrigued by the quality of what was produced. I have used the camera since and am always excited by the hit and miss outcome I receive.
