The Youth of Kathmandu

Anna Pettigrew
It's the little things that count

In my eyes some of my most effective work is my little moments. I started taking pictures when I was about ten and living in Denmark, after getting a hold of an old camera, which film type has long been discontinued. I obtained my BA Hons in fine art photography at the Edinburgh College of Art. In any institutional based degree you are made to do many different projects, all with the intention of broadening your skills and knowledge of your subject. But when I was left to do my own work I always returned to creating various series of photographs telling little stories of fractions of days, or places, or mostly feelings. Do not believe that I am not interested in large world events, quite the opposite. But I believe that in a large story, there are many small stories underlying and it is them that attract me. Homing in on the little things often gives away the bigger picture by itself. By capturing modest little episodes an intimacy is often exposed that otherwise would have been lost in a bigger picture.
